OREANDA-NEWS Russia in the 2022-2023 agricultural year (from July 1, 2022 to June 30, 2023) can provide up to 40% of Algeria's demand for milling wheat and supply up to 3.5 million tons to this country, Elena Tyurina, director of the analytics Department of the Russian Grain Union (RZS), told RIA Novosti.

"In total, Russia can supply up to 3.5 million tons to Algeria, providing more than 40% of Algeria's demand for the import of milling wheat in the current season," Tyurina believes. She recalled that France was the main supplier of milling wheat to the Algerian market until 2021, but a year ago the state refused to import French wheat for political reasons.

"Algeria is a major importer of milling wheat. According to the USDA, in the 2022-2023 agricultural season, it ranks fifth in the world ranking of wheat importers and can buy 8.2 million tons of it. And the refusal to supply French wheat led to a sharp increase in demand for Russian wheat from Algeria," Tyurina said.
