OREANDA-NEWS In June 2025, the United States increased imports of Chinese rare earth magnets seven times. This was reported by CNBC.
The dynamics were explained by the desire of American companies to purchase critical items after the conclusion of a preliminary Sino-American trade agreement. This was preceded by Beijing's decision to limit the supply of these magnets to the United States, which are necessary for the production of electric vehicles, wind turbines and MRI machines. This is how China responded to the high tariffs imposed by US President Donald Trump. As you know, China accounts for almost 90 percent of the rare earth magnets market.
In June, the United States received about 353 tons of rare earth permanent magnets, which is 660 percent more than in the previous month. It is noted that the United States is the second largest consumer of rare earth magnets from China after Germany.
In total, China exported 3,188 tons of rare earth permanent magnets in June, which is almost 160 percent more than in May, but 38 percent less compared to the same period last year.
In May 2025, exports of rare earth metals from China collapsed to the lowest level in the last five years. Shipments decreased by more than 60 percent year-on-year, to 2,117 tons.
