OREANDA-NEWS The construction of a highway between Russia and the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) has started. The start of work via video communication was announced by the Chairman of the Government of the Russian Federation Mikhail Mishustin, the press service of the Cabinet of Ministers reports.

Chairman of the Cabinet of Ministers Park Tae-song attended the ceremony from the North Korean side. The bridge will cross the border river Tumannaya in Primorsky Krai. Its length will reach one kilometer, and with access roads — 4.7 kilometers. The highway will be two-lane, 7 meters wide. The length of the Russian side will be 424 meters. A car checkpoint will be set up at the bridge crossing. According to initial calculations, the construction will be completed in a year and a half.

According to the Russian Prime Minister, the project will become a landmark stage in relations between Moscow and Pyongyang and will serve as a symbol of the two countries' desire to strengthen cooperation. "We are creating a reliable basis for closer cooperation between the two countries, a path for an open and fruitful dialogue, for bringing our peoples closer together, increasing the number of trips and meetings, exchanging new impressions, and getting to know the history and traditions of Russia and North Korea," Mishustin said.

The agreement on the construction of a bridge between Russia and North Korea was signed in June 2024 following the visit of Russian President Vladimir Putin to Pyongyang. The project has been under discussion for about 10 years, but has met with discontent from China, which is actively promoting navigation along the Tumannaya River.
