OREANDA-NEWS The Arlington ship, which sank with Captain Frederick Burke north of the US state of Michigan, was discovered 84 years after the crash, the Daily Mail writes with reference to the Historical Society of Shipwrecks of the Great Lakes.

"A World War II-era ship was discovered at the bottom of Lake Superior almost 84 years after it disappeared during a severe storm. The ship was found north of the Kivino Peninsula in Michigan, buried at a depth of 650 feet (about 200 meters. )," the publication says.

The shipwreck occurred in May 1940. It is known that after the storm began, the ship's mate ordered a change in direction, but Captain Burke ordered them to return to course. As a result, Arlington collided with the Collingwood vessel. which the crew members were able to move to. Everyone was able to escape except the captain who remained on the ship, whose decision still remains unclear to researchers.
"Why did he sink with his ship... when he could have easily escaped, as could his crew members? <...> The fact is that no one will ever know the answer," the Historical Society's report says.

As reported in the article, the captain managed to wave to the escaped crew members before going to the bottom with his ship.
