OREANDA-NEWS  The Rosselkhoznadzor's management artificially creates prerequisites for stopping food imports from Azerbaijan. Bashir Guliyev, head of the Association of Fruit and Vegetable Producers and Suppliers of the Republic, announced signs of commodity kenseling on the part of the Russian Federation. His words are quoted by the local portal Minval.

Every time Russia's diplomatic or political relations with neighboring countries deteriorate, the relevant departments of the Russian Federation begin to "find" "harmful substances or additives" in products supplied from these countries. A similar situation is currently observed with Azerbaijani exports of fruits and vegetables, including tomatoes, Guliyev said.

It all resembles a "cancellation culture." However, unlike Western countries, Russia transfers this kind of practice not to people, but to food. In the case of Azerbaijan, these are mainly vegetables and fruits, Guliyev explained. Such a strategy may eventually lead to a full-fledged trade war, which is not beneficial to either Moscow or Baku, he concluded.

Relations between the two countries began to deteriorate rapidly in early July due to the actions of the Russian security forces during the detention of natives of the republic in Yekaterinburg. On suspicion of involvement in a series of contract killings in the region in the early 2000s, law enforcement officials took more than 50 people to the local police station. The lives of two detainees could not be saved. One of them died of heart failure, the causes of the other's death are still being determined.

After this incident, Deputy of the Parliament of the Republic (Milli Majlis) Rasim Musabekov announced the suspension of the economic dialogue between Azerbaijan and Russia. Major bilateral business projects were also under threat of disruption. Experts estimated the potential economic damage from the breakdown of relations at hundreds of millions of dollars. At the same time, Azerbaijan's losses in this scenario will be more serious than the damage to the Russian Federation. The republic mainly supplies vegetables and fruits (persimmons, tomatoes, etc.) to Russia, while Baku buys Urals oil from Moscow, exporting its more expensive grade of raw materials, Azeri Light. Such a scheme allows the country to earn a lot of money on the price difference, but its suspension can lead to significant budget losses.
