OREANDA-NEWS  The ambassadors of the EU countries agreed to take restrictive measures "in connection with the situation" in Belarus and the "participation" of this country "in the Russian aggression against Ukraine." The measures involve the inclusion of new individuals and legal entities in the black lists. This is stated on Twitter of the Spanish presidency of the EU.

The names of those against whom sanctions are planned to be imposed or other details are not given in the publication.

By "the situation in Belarus," the Chairmanship means numerous arrests and criminal prosecutions of protesters in the republic. They began after the presidential elections on August 9, 2020. The protesters demanded the resignation of President Alexander Lukashenko and a new vote.

The protests were harshly suppressed by the police and riot police. The EU and the United States, along with some other states, condemned the incident, and the official representative of the department, Maria Zakharova, accused "external forces" of trying to split society and destabilize the situation in Belarus.
