OREANDA-NEWS Indian Minister of Trade and Industry Piyush Goyal said that Delhi is not going to hastily agree to a trade agreement with the United States under pressure from Washington.

"Of course, we are negotiating with the American side, but we do not conclude deals in a hurry, by a certain deadline or at gunpoint," the Hindustan Times quoted him as saying from the Berlin Global Dialogue conference.

"India is acting for the long term and never makes decisions in a hurry or under pressure. We have accepted the fact that our goods are subject to US duties," the minister continued.

According to him, the Indian authorities are exploring ways to overcome trade restrictions, are looking for new markets, and are addressing domestic demand.

However, an unnamed representative of the Indian authorities told Bloomberg that India and the United States are close to a trade agreement. The source claimed that the negotiators had resolved most of the differences, but the agreement should be approved by the top political leadership of both states.

US relations with India have also soured due to trade policy. On August 27, a 25% duty on goods from India, imposed by Trump due to purchases of Russian oil, came into force. Thus, starting from August 27, goods from India will be subject to a 50% duty by the United States, if we count the previously imposed tariffs of 25% as part of the White House's revision of trade agreements with countries around the world.

After that, the countries held several rounds of trade negotiations.
