OREANDA-NEWS Turkey wants to return the S-400 anti-aircraft missile system (SAM) to Russia in order to improve relations with the United States and regain American F-35 fighter jets. This is reported by Bloomberg, citing sources.

"A close ally of [US President Donald] Trump's ambassador to Turkey, Tom Barrack, said that Ankara is approaching abandoning the S-400, predicting that this issue could be resolved within 4-6 months," the article says.

According to sources, such a move could contribute to improving Turkey's relations with the United States, paving the way for the lifting of US sanctions against the Turkish defense industry and gaining access to the F-35.

According to the agency's interlocutors, Ankara hopes that its role as a mediator in the Ukrainian conflict "will encourage Moscow to respond more favorably to the request to return the C-400."

On December 11, it became known that the European Union wanted to buy Russian S-400 air defense systems from Turkey and transfer them to Ukraine. It was noted that such a step by Brussels would allow Kiev to obtain the necessary weapons, and Ankara to purchase F—35 fighter jets from Washington.
