OREANDA-NEWS Roskomnadzor has confirmed that the Proton VPN service is subject to blocking, as it is a means of circumventing restrictions on sites banned in Russia. The agency's press service told RBC.

The agency added that the VPN-services, as well as other means of circumventing the blocking of illegal content, are a threat, according to the law "On Communications".

Earlier, Internet users from Russia began to complain en masse about the fact that their popular VPN-services Nord VPN and Proton VPN stopped working. The first complaints began to come in the evening of June 1. Proton VPN representatives suggested that the failure could be associated with blocking by Internet service providers or the authorities.

State Duma deputy Oleg Matveichev told Gazeta.Ru that Roskomnadzor was blocking VPN services for the "security of Russians' data".
