Russia is Predicted to See a Sharp Decline in Timber Export Revenues

OREANDA-NEWS Sanctions of the European Union and other Western countries will sharply hit the income of Russian timber producers, while the producers will not be able to replace the market without losses, experts of "Kommersant" newspaper suggested.
According to "Roslesinforg", Europe, based on the last year's record volumes, blocked the supply of products worth six billion euros. The countries from the list of "unfriendly" account for 45.8% of exports of Russian timber products, of which three quarters went to the EU. In the near future sanctions against the timber industry in Russia may take the U.S., where last year the products were supplied for 1.6 billion.
The WhatWood Agency thinks that the EU ban has affected at least 3.8 billion rubles worth of products in money terms. However, in reality the revenues of the timber industry will drop much deeper due to the lack of an alternative to the European market.
China is the most important sales point for Russian timber, but experts remind that Beijing supplies products made of Russian lumber to the same "unfriendly countries" which may prohibit such import.
Earlier it was reported that in 2021 the correctional institutions of the Federal Penitentiary Service sharply increased logging, which allowed them to collectively approach the indicators of large timber holdings. Prisoners increased their logging by 22.7 percent at once.
