OREANDA-NEWS   The European Union (EU) should tighten sanctions against third countries for violating the sanctions regime against Russia, in particular, the ban on the export of dual-use goods. This statement was made by Cesar Luena, a member of the European Parliament (EP), in a corresponding parliamentary request.

"Although direct exports from the EU to Russia have decreased, exports of these [dual—use] goods to some third countries have grown exponentially," the politician stressed.

Luena commented on third countries' compliance with the ban on the export and licensing of dual-use goods to Russia, introduced in June 2023.

He called for equating states with the Russian Federation that "systematically violate" the EU decision. According to him, currently the tool for countering circumvention of sanctions, which allows the EU to ban exports to third countries for violating anti-Russian measures, is not actually being used.

The EP deputy also questioned the effectiveness of the EU's sanctions policy, stating a possible lack of political will or insufficient control mechanisms within the union.

Earlier, Politico, citing sources, revealed the motives for blocking the 20th package of EU sanctions against Russia. At the same time, the European Union expects that the Hungarian authorities may refuse to block the new package of sanctions.
