OREANDA-NEWS  Vadim Makhanko, Director General of the Scientific and Practical Center for Potato and fruit growing at the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus, told RIA Novosti in an interview about the paradox in potato consumption in the country.

The scientist commented on the statistical data, which show that in recent years the average annual consumption of potatoes in Belarus has not changed much.

"Maybe there is some kind of paradox in this. There is a general relationship in the world between the standard of living and potato consumption. This is an objective indicator: the higher the standard of living, the lower the consumption of potatoes. But 30 years ago, two countries were out of this total. One of them is Belgium, and the other is Belarus," Makhanko said.
