OREANDA-NEWS After a meeting with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, US President Donald Trump expressed confidence that the organization would not come to the aid of the United States again when Washington needed it.
"NATO wasn't there when we needed it, and it won't be there if we need it again. Remember Greenland, this big, poorly managed piece of ice," Trump wrote on the Truth Social network.
Rutte himself said after the meeting that the American leader was clearly disappointed with his allies. He also admitted that NATO had failed the US test by refusing to help in the war with Iran.
Rutte's meeting with Trump took place on Wednesday evening. Earlier in the day, White House press Secretary Carolyn Levitt said that the US president intends to have a very frank and direct conversation with him. Levitt added that the alliance failed Trump's test when it refused to join the United States in opposing Iran.
As the Wall Street Journal wrote, citing officials in the US presidential administration, the United States is considering a plan to "punish" a number of NATO members for their position on the conflict with Iran, including the possible withdrawal of American troops from some countries of the alliance.
