OREANDA-NEWS In a recent telephone conversation, US President Donald Trump chastised Pentagon Chief Pete Hegseth over his decision to suspend the deployment of troops to Poland. This is reported by The Wall Street Journal with reference to current and former American officials.
During the conversation, Trump asked Hegseth why the deployment of troops to Poland was canceled. After that, he explained to Hegseth that the United States should not treat Poland badly, given that it is an American ally and has close ties with the White House.
Hegseth's decision was reportedly sharply criticized by Republican and Democratic lawmakers, as well as Polish officials, who said they had not been consulted about the move.
The Pentagon chief's actions surprised some officials, as Germany, not Poland, criticized the US strategy in the war with Iran.
Earlier, US Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth reviewed the decision to send 4,000 American troops to Poland. According to Politico, the reason why the Pentagon chief changed his mind remains unclear.
Polish Deputy Minister of National Defense Pawel Zalewski then said that Warsaw would put pressure on American officials because it considers itself an "exemplary ally" within NATO and expects further expansion of military cooperation with the United States.
On May 21, Trump announced that the United States would deploy an additional 5,000 troops to Poland. He attributed this to his good relations with Polish President Karol Nawrocki.
