OREANDA-NEWS About 60 earthquakes have been recorded in the Sevastopol area since the beginning of the year, which is unusual, Director of the Institute of Seismology and Geodynamics of the Vernadsky Crimean Federal University, Doctor of Geological and Mineralogical Sciences Yuri Wolfman told RIA Novosti.
An earthquake of magnitude 2.9 occurred on Tuesday evening in the Black Sea off the coast of Sevastopol, 15 kilometers from Cape Fiolent. On Wednesday, another earthquake occurred in the same area, with a magnitude of 3.1.
"The beginning of 2026 was marked by earthquakes on the eastern (relative to Crimea – ed.) flank, in the Anapa zone, Sevastopol is now being recorded. This number of earthquakes is unusual. As of today, about 60 earthquakes have been recorded (since the beginning of the year near Sevastopol – ed.)," said Wolfman.
He noted that it is still difficult to say what is the reason for such a large number of earthquakes, and drew attention to the fact that the structural affiliation of the epicenter to the zone of intersection of two faults is obvious.
Earlier, the scientist told the agency that the epicenter of the earthquakes near Sevastopol is located at the intersection of two tectonic faults located deep in the earth's crust. According to him, one fault separates the mountainous Crimea from the plain and runs in the Sevastopol area, and the second fault – the West Crimean or Odessa-Sinop fault - stretches along the Odessa-Sinop line.
On February 10, 2026, an earthquake of magnitude 4.8 occurred in the Krasnodar Territory, the epicenter was located at a distance of 30 kilometers from Novorossiysk and Anapa at a depth of about 10 kilometers. Numerous aftershocks were observed, the scientists reported.
