OREANDA-NEWS In the first eight months of 2026, sales of optical glasses in Russia increased by 12 percent year-on-year, with an average increase in receipts of 13 percent, to 4.8 thousand rubles. Kommersant writes about this with reference to the data of the "Check Index".

At the same time, Yandex.Maps users began to search for optics salons 17 percent more often, and in Russia as a whole, such points began to open more often. Although if we take only cities with a population of more than a million people, the number of opticians decreases.

Ruslan Sultanov, chief ophthalmologist at the Be Healthy clinic network, believes the sales growth is a consequence of the increasing prevalence of visual impairments among Russians. Expert estimates and data from the Ministry of Health indicate that 30-40 percent of the population has problems, which is about 40-50 million people.

For example, if in the 1990s 20-25 percent of schoolchildren had myopia by the time they graduated, now it is 50-60 percent. Children are increasingly prescribed their first glasses as early as 5-6 years old, rather than 10-12 years old. Doctors call the regular use of gadgets the main reason.

However, Sergey Shulyak, CEO of the DSM Group, does not rule out that a partial ban on the operation of vending machines with lenses could affect the growth in the number of optical salons.

Earlier it was reported that in the first 11 months of 2025, optics and ophthalmology account for 3.9 percent of the total amount and one percent of the number of payments in the structure of health spending.
