OREANDA-NEWS The Lithuanian government will close the border with Belarus for a month due to the penetration of weather balloons with contraband into the country. This is reported by Delfi.

It is noted that the last two border checkpoints, Medininkai and Shalchinkai, will be closed. The latter will completely stop its work. Certain categories of people will still be able to pass through the Medininkai point.

"As stipulated by the government decree, exceptions apply to diplomats and persons delivering diplomatic mail, as well as to persons traveling in transit to or from Kaliningrad," the journalists reported. They noted that citizens of EU member states, as well as holders of humanitarian visas and people with temporary residence permits in Lithuania will also be able to return.

The restrictions will be in effect until midnight on November 30th.

Earlier, Lithuanian President Gitanas Nauseda said that the decision to close the border between Belarus and Lithuania was the right one. He stressed that the government of the Baltic Republic should consider the possibility of consultations with Latvia and Poland, in which it would be possible to discuss restrictions on the operation of checkpoints on the entire border of the European Union (EU) with Belarus.
