OREANDA-NEWS  President Vladimir Putin discussed the situation around Iran by phone with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

"The situation in the Middle East and the situation around Iran were discussed. Vladimir Putin outlined principled approaches in favor of intensifying political and diplomatic steps in the interests of ensuring stability and security in the region," the Kremlin's press service said.

The parties agreed to continue contacts at various levels.

At the end of last year, protests began in the Islamic Republic over the devaluation of the Iranian rial, which affected wholesale and retail prices, as well as caused sharp fluctuations in the exchange rate.

Since January 8, the demonstrations began to take on a large-scale character. This happened at the instigation of Reza Pahlavi, the son of the Shah of Iran, who was overthrown in 1979. He called for a general strike and the seizure of strategically important streets and facilities, and also asked Trump to intervene in what was happening.
In some cities, the rallies escalated into clashes with security forces and were accompanied by slogans against the political system. Casualties were reported on both sides. On Thursday, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi said that the unrest in the country had stopped.
President Masoud Peseshkian promised to continue economic reforms and solve the problems that have arisen, and blamed the United States and Israel for organizing the protests. He called on Iranians to take to the streets to prevent the radicals from replacing their real demands.
