Russia and India may sign a memorandum on the Northern Sea Route by the end of the year

OREANDA-NEWS An intergovernmental memorandum between Russia and India on cooperation in the development of the Northern Sea Route (NSR) may be signed by the end of this year, First Deputy Prime Minister Denis Manturov said in an interview with Interfax.
"India's geographical location and the role of maritime transportation in its foreign trade increase the interest of this country and market participants in the development of transit transportation using the NSR. This topic is being discussed within the framework of a specialized working group of the intergovernmental Russian-Indian commission. One of the results achieved was the prepared intergovernmental memorandum of cooperation on the NSR, which we expect to sign before the end of the year," he said on the eve of the Innoprom exhibition. "Next year we are ready to organize a joint pilot flight along the NSR. This will be a symbolic event in the year of the 80th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between our countries," Manturov added.
According to him, in the future, the volume of Russian-Indian cargo turnover through the NSR may reach 5 million tons annually.
India's participation in the NSR was the subject of negotiations at the August meeting of the intergovernmental Russian-Indian commission on trade, economic, scientific, technical and cultural cooperation in Moscow. At that time, the First Deputy Prime Minister of the Russian Federation said that options for mutually beneficial cooperation in this area were currently being worked out by Rosatom State Corporation with Indian partners.
Earlier this summer, the head of Rosatom, Alexei Likhachev, told reporters that India and China were committing to increase cargo transit along the NSR to 20 million tons by 2030. This is one fifth of the volume assumed by the target plan for the development of the Arctic transport route, about 100 million tons by 2030.
