OREANDA-NEWS Scientists at the Federal Scientific and Clinical Center for Medical Radiology and Oncology of the Russian Federal Medical Academy of Sciences in Dimitrovgrad have created a drug for the treatment of severe cancer. This is reported by Rossiyskaya Gazeta.
Specialists from the State Scientific Center, the Scientific Research Institute of Atomic Reactors (SSC NIIAR), also participated in the development. The drug, called Rakurs, is intended for radionuclide therapy of patients with prostate cancer at the stage of bone metastasis. The rare isotope radium-223, which is produced at the SSC NIAR, is its main component. When it enters the patient's body, it destroys tumor foci and reduces pain.
The synthesis of radium-223 is a complex process that scientists spend months and years on. The received raw materials are supplied from the SSC NIIAR to the Dimitrovgrad Center of Radiology and Oncology of the FMBA of Russia. There, specialists will convert it into ampoules with a solution.
Earlier it was reported that scientists from Novosibirsk have created and patented a new compound that can increase the effectiveness of chemotherapy for cervical cancer.
