OREANDA-NEWS  The EU authorities are seeking to reach a preliminary trade agreement with the United States in order to maintain a 10% duty on their goods imported into the United States, Bloomberg reports, citing sources.

"The European Union is seeking to conclude a preliminary trade deal with the United States this week that will allow it to fix a 10 percent tariff rate after August 1 while they negotiate a permanent agreement," the publication says.

In addition, as the agency's interlocutors noted, Brussels wants to get Washington to exempt some of the "key goods" from the 10% duty, including aircraft and parts for them, wine and alcoholic beverages.

On Monday, the representative of the European Commission, Olof Gilles, said that the EU continues to negotiate with the United States in order to conclude a trade agreement and avoid high duties on its goods until July 9.

Earlier, US President Donald Trump said that duties for countries that have not concluded an agreement with the United States will take effect on August 1 instead of July 9, as previously announced.

In April, the EU, amid the suspension of US duties, also suspended retaliatory measures against American imports for three months.

Intensive negotiations are currently underway between Brussels and Washington in an attempt to overcome differences and reach a deal that will allow the EU to avoid increasing duties on European imports to the United States by 50%.

Earlier it was announced that the deadline for negotiations expires on July 9th.
