OREANDA-NEWS The possible creation of a military organization similar to the North Atlantic Alliance based on the European Union (EU) would be a threat to Russia, and it would have to defend itself against this aggression. This was stated by Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Alexander Grushko, TASS reports.
"This worries us greatly precisely because we actually have to deal with a new military organization that is aggressively opposed to Russia and is building its military strategy accordingly (...) which directly poses threats to our country, and against which we will have to defend ourselves," the diplomat warned.
However, Grushko expressed doubt that Europe could have its own military bloc, since it is the United States that controls NATO, and the alliance controls the European Union. Therefore, the deputy head doubted that the EU would be able to separate from NATO in the future.
On May 21, the EU ambassadors agreed on a plan for the militarization of Europe in the amount of 150 billion euros, which was proposed by the head of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen. It is noted that this is the first large-scale program of the European Union aimed at increasing investments in the defense sector, which will begin to be implemented in practice.
