The sea level was higher than expected

OREANDA-NEWS Global sea level has been significantly underestimated due to the use of inaccurate models. A study on this has been published in the journal Nature. It turned out that the ocean level is on average 30 centimeters higher than previous estimates. And in some regions of the global South, including Southeast Asia and the Indo-Pacific basin, the discrepancy reaches 100-150 centimeters.
Scientists estimate that if the water rises another meter, 37 percent of coastal areas will be below sea level. This will directly affect from 77 to 132 million people. Experts called the revealed discrepancy in calculations an "interdisciplinary blind spot." All this time, oceanographers and surveyors use different measurement systems, and a critical error occurs at the junction of disciplines.
As the president of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Academician Gennady Krasnikov, said, global warming is happening twice as fast in Russia as in the world. He added that global warming creates many problems, including melting permafrost, damage to agriculture and invasion — the appearance of plants and animals on the territory that are not typical for the region.
