OREANDA-NEWS  The winner of the most prestigious Japanese literary award Akutagawa for the current year, 33-year-old Rie Kudan admitted that about 5% of the sentences in her winning novel "Tokyo Tower of Sympathy" ("Tokyo-to Dojo-to" ("Sympathy Tower Tokyo") were generated by artificial intelligence and included in the text unchanged.

"This novel was written using artificial intelligence text generation technologies such as ChatGPT. About, perhaps, 5% of the sentences in the text were generated by artificial intelligence and used unchanged. In the future, I would also like to continue using technologies in order to further develop my creativity by applying them," the author noted.

A recording of Rie Kudan's press conference is available on the Nippon TV channel's Youtube channel.
The writer was born on September 27, 1990 in Saitama Prefecture. This is her second nomination for the prestigious Akutagawa Award. The first was in 2021 with the novel "Schoolgirl".

According to media reports, the action of the winning novel "Tokyo Tower of Sympathy" takes place in the future, where a skyscraper tower is being built in Tokyo Park in Shinjuku, designed to comfortably accommodate criminals based on the theory that "criminals are people who deserve sympathy." The novel tells the story of a female architect who is dissatisfied with such a tolerant society and the increasing presence of generative artificial intelligence technologies.
