OREANDA-NEWS. May 13, 2011. DTEK, the leader of the Ukrainian fuel and energy sector, has announced the winners of the tenders for Emission Reduction Units (ERUs)[1] sale by the thermal power plants (TPPs) of Vostokenergo (DTEK). They are Global Carbon B.V. (Netherlands), OHANA LLP (Carbon Resource Management) (UK) and CF CARBON FUND II LIMITED (UK).

The abatement of carbon dioxide emissions from Vostokenergo’s (DTEK) fossil-fueled power plants over 2006-2009 verified by the independent accredited certification company Bureau Veritas has formed the basis for the tenders. Thus, the total emission reduction by Vostokenergo came to 2,036 thou.t of CO2-equivalent. Over this period, Zuevskaya TPP has reduced its CO2-equivalent emissions by 97.297 thou.t, Kurakhovskaya TPP – by 592.556  thou.t. and Luganskaya TPP – by 1,345.598 thou.t.

Vostokenergo (DTEK) has generated emission reduction units due to successful retrofitting of the company’s thermal power plants, which improved the combustion efficiency of its pulverized-coal-fired units. The company started a by-component retrofitting of its units in 2008 and is to complete it by 2018. All 17 power generating units of Vostokenergo will be retrofitted.

‘DTEK’s efforts to cut down on greenhouse gas emissions from our operating companies are a part of our sustainable development strategy aimed at environmental care providing and improving the living conditions for the residents of the regions where we have businesses’, –  says Yuriy Ryzhenkov,  DTEK’s COO. – According to the retrofitting projection we are planning to have an annual decrease of 900 thou.t. СО2-equivalent after completion of works. Bureau Veritas conclusion on the first two years results confirms our expectations’.
