Pokemon main series sales reach new milestone
OREANDA-NEWS. March 18, 2016. Sales of mainline Pokemon games have now reached 200 million units worldwide, The Pokemon Company has announced. This figure counts copies of the core series sold through February 29 and does not include the franchise's numerous spinoffs.
With spinoffs counted, the series has now reached 279 million units globally, up from 277 million units as of September 2015, according to data posted on the Pokemon website (via Gematsu).
The Pokemon trading card game is also a massive hit, with more than 21.5 billion cards shipped to 74 countries and in 11 different languages to date.
All of this has been achieved in 20 years, as the Pokemon franchise celebrates its 20th anniversary this year. The first games, Pokemon Red and Blue, were released in Japan on February 27, 1996. Nintendo recently re-released these games for 3DS and they quickly broke eShop sales records.
The next mainline Pokemon games are Pokemon Sun and Moon, which will launch for 3DS this holiday. While you'll have to wait for those games, the Pokemon video game series grows tomorrow (March 18) with the release of Wii U fighting game Pokken Tournament.
