OREANDA-NEWS Kazakhstan may stop buying electricity from Russia in 2027 to cover its deficit after the commissioning of new generating facilities, according to Deputy Minister of Energy of the Republic Sungat Yessimkhanov.
"If we put all our planned facilities into operation at the end of this year or the beginning of next year ..., then in 2027, I think, we will not do it at all," Yessimkhanov said during a government briefing, answering the question of how much Kazakhstan will buy electricity from the Russian Federation to cover its deficit.
Yessimkhanov recalled that in 2024, the electricity deficit in Kazakhstan was 2.1 billion kWh, and in 2025 - about 1.5 billion kWh. "This figure is decreasing," the deputy minister said.
At the same time, he recalled that Kazakhstan, buying electricity from Russia, exports part of it to Kyrgyzstan in order to provide its southern regions with water.
The essence of the exchange between the republics is that Kyrgyzstan discharges additional volumes of water from the Toktogul reservoir in the summer to irrigate farmland in southern Kazakhstan. The Kazakh side, in turn, supplies electricity so that Kyrgyzstan can reduce electricity generation at its hydroelectric power plants in winter and accumulate water in the reservoir.
In October last year, the head of the Kazakh Ministry of Energy, Yerlan Akkenzhenov, said that by 2029 it was planned to implement 68 projects to introduce new 6.6 gigawatts of capacity, which would ensure a surplus in the republic's energy system.
