OREANDA-NEWS Specialists from the Institute of Catalysis of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences, with the support of the Russian Science Foundation, are developing highly efficient catalysts for the direct conversion of petroleum raw materials into promising fuels - synthesis gas and hydrogen, the IC SB RAS told RIA Novosti.

The scientific institute explained that currently the structure of oil refining is changing, alternative technologies are being developed. And hydrogen—containing mixtures are promising fuels for fuel cell power plants. One of the promising areas is the catalytic conversion of naphtha (a mixture of hydrocarbons released during primary oil refining) into synthesis gas (a mixture of carbon monoxide and hydrogen), which can later be processed into pure hydrogen.

"One of the ways is the direct conversion of hydrocarbons into synthesis gas using highly efficient structured catalysts. They improve the conditions of heat and mass transfer, reduce diffusion limitations and increase the stability of catalytic systems at high temperatures. Specialists of IC SB RAS plan to create such structured catalysts," the report says.

Vladislav Shilov, a junior researcher at the Heterogeneous Catalysis Department of the Institute of Catalysis, explained that as part of the work, scientists want to understand which naphtha components are the most difficult to convert into synthesis gas and which properties of the catalyst determine the effectiveness of this process.

"We will pay special attention to the effect of various additives on the activity of catalysts, fuel conversion and resistance to decontamination. This will allow us to switch to a targeted selection of the composition of catalysts for productive processing," he said.

The main task of the scientists is to create a scientific and technical foundation for the development of catalytic technologies applicable at Russian oil enterprises. The research was supported by a grant from the Russian Science Foundation.
