OREANDA-NEWS The EU Council has agreed to postpone for one year the introduction of a number of requirements for controlling methane emissions from oil, gas and coal imports due to disruptions in energy markets caused by the conflict in the Middle East, the Council said in a statement.
"The aim is to postpone for one year the separate rules on the import of crude oil, natural gas and coal, and to avoid additional pressure on the reliability of the EU's energy supply, given the turmoil in energy markets caused by the conflict in the Middle East," the document says.
According to the agreed position, importers' obligations to monitor and report on methane emissions are proposed to be postponed from January 1, 2027 to January 1, 2028, emission intensity reporting requirements for August 2029, and limit values for August 2031. For the amendments to enter into force, it is necessary to coordinate with the European Parliament.
