OREANDA-NEWS The US demanded that the EU take active action against the "Nord stream-2", the publication Handelsblatt reported, citing an official in the White House.

"We want the project to be stopped," said an employee of the administration.

He added that "it is time for action".

United States Ambassador to Germany Richard Grenell threatened in January sanctions against German companies that are involved in the creation of the "Nord stream — 2". In his opinion, the implementation of this project together with the "Turkish stream" in the South will lead to the fact that the transit of fuel through Ukraine will become unnecessary.

The German government said in response that there is no legal basis for intervention in the construction of the pipeline.

The Prime Minister of Poland Mateusz Morawiecki also recognized that the construction of the pipeline cannot be stopped.

Washington continues to demand from its European partners to take measures to ensure its own energy security. Also in the United States believe that the EU is obliged to ensure "uninterrupted gas supplies through Ukraine".

The “Nord Stream – 2” project provides for the laying of two gas pipelines across the Baltic Sea from Russia to Germany with a capacity of 55 billion cubic meters per year.

The USA, which is interested in selling its LNG on the European market, and Ukraine, which is afraid of losing profits from gas transit from Russia, are against the construction. Lithuania, Latvia and Poland consider the plans to build the gas pipeline politically motivated.

Moscow has repeatedly urged not to perceive “Nord stream – 2” as an instrument of influence. Russia stressed that the project pursues exclusively economic goals.

Earlier was reported that the construction of the "Nord stream-2" gas pipeline is supported by 73% of Germans. According to the publication, only 16% of Germans believe that "the project should be abandoned.
