In July 2026, the trade turnover between Japan and Russia decreased by 7.44 percent year-on-year. The fact that the countries began to trade less with each other, with reference to data from the Japanese Ministry of Finance, reports TASS.

OREANDA-NEWS  During the month, the trade turnover amounted to 95.5 billion yen (about 600.8 million dollars). Imports from Russia decreased by 27.4 percent, while exports from Japan to Russia increased by 32.1 percent year-on-year.

Liquefied natural gas (LNG) remained the main commodity, accounting for 36.1 percent of all imports from Russia to Japan. Deliveries of cars and their components, in turn, remained the main position of Japanese exports to Russia with a share of 76.7 percent.

At the same time, LNG purchases fell by 70.7 percent, and oil supplies (except for supplies from Sakhalin-2 related to the purchase of LNG from the project) were not carried out. Imports of Russian coal decreased by 50.4 percent, while shipments of iron and steel increased by 304.9 percent. Imports of medical devices and non-ferrous metals increased by 100 and 91.1 percent, respectively.

Japan also reduced imports of Russian seafood (minus 27.1 percent) and vegetables (minus 18.6 percent), but began to buy grains more actively (10.1 percent). The Asian country also increased the supply of passenger cars by 39.9 percent and reduced the supply of spare parts and components for cars to Russia (minus 12 percent). In addition, exports of rubber products decreased (minus 49.8 percent) and shipments of plastic products increased (plus 91.7 percent).

UK sanctions related to shipping and insurance of Russian liquefied natural gas (LNG) could undermine South Korea's energy security. Korea has already asked London to exempt its imports of Russian LNG from British restrictions. Otherwise, the supply of this energy source may be disrupted.
