OREANDA-NEWS Restricting the export of lemons from Turkey will not impact prices in Russia, according to Ilya Bereznyuk, the managing partner of Agro and Food Communications. In an interview with RT, he stated, "Apart from Turkey, lemons are imported to Russia from Argentina, South Africa, China, Egypt, Morocco, Uzbekistan, Brazil, Mexico, and Uruguay. If imports from Turkey are halted, distributors and retail chains can partially increase their supplies from these countries."
Bereznyuk explained that the supply of lemons from Turkey typically occurs between the end of October and the beginning of April. Therefore, he noted, the suspension of imports aligns with the annual schedule.
He added that if the import of these citrus fruits from Turkey is completely halted, Russia can increase its supply from other countries, and this situation will not result in significant price changes for consumers.
The Turkish Ministry of Commerce announced that the country will temporarily halt the export of lemons starting from April 8 due to the onset of cold weather and to meet the domestic demand. The ministry clarified that the decision is based on the occurrence of frosts in the southern provinces of Mersin, Adana, and Hatay.
Turkey is a major exporter of citrus fruits, with lemons and tangerines being the most popular exports, accounting for 70% of the total. Oranges follow closely, accounting for 15%.
Russia is the primary destination for Turkish lemon exports.
