OREANDA-NEWS Air Serbia has been given the opportunity to operate regular flights from Belgrade to Shanghai through the airspace of the Russian Federation, as indicated by correspondence between the aviation authorities of Russia and Serbia, published on the website of the Federal Air Transport Agency.
The Serbian Directorate of Civil Aviation had previously applied to the Ministry of Transport of the Russian Federation with an initiative to use Air Serbia's so-called Trans-Siberian route. In a reply letter dated April 25, the Russian ministry announced the inclusion of Shanghai as an intermediate point in the route table of the agreement on air services between the countries. In a May letter, the Serbian aviation authorities expressed their gratitude for the prompt response.
According to the FlightRadar24 service, on May 20 and 23, Air Serbia operated a flight from Belgrade to Shanghai through the airspace of Bulgaria, Georgia, Azerbaijan and Kazakhstan. The flight time was more than 10 hours.
A system of international air corridors passes through Russia, which are considered the most optimal from the point of view of orthodontics. Since the 1970s, the Russian Federation (formerly the USSR) has been charging payments from foreign carriers for the opportunity to fly on these routes - the so-called "trans-Siberian" royalties. Despite this, flights through the Russian skies remain more economical for airlines.
After the start of the military operation in Ukraine, Western airlines began to fly over the airspace of the Russian Federation. This led to the fact that transit through the Russian sky collapsed first by 85%, and by the end of the whole of 2022 - by 59%, it was reported with reference to data from the Federal Air Transport Agency.
At the same time, the non-use of cross-polar routes increased the flight time of American airlines by more than 2 hours, which led to additional costs (primarily for fuel) in the amount of about $ 40,000 per flight, the Federal Air Transport Agency said. Bypassing the trans-Eastern and trans-Asian routes, according to the agency, increased flight time by an average of an hour and a half.
