OREANDA-NEWS  Eight states have joined the new package of sanctions introduced earlier against Belarus by the European Union, the press service of the Council of Europe reported.

According to the report, the restrictive measures were joined by "candidate countries North Macedonia, Montenegro, Albania, Ukraine, Bosnia and Herzegovina, the countries of the European Free Trade Association Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway, which are members of the European Economic Area."

"They will ensure compliance of their national policy with the decision of the Council of Europe. The European Union takes note of this commitment and welcomes it," the statement reads.

On August 3, the EU expanded sanctions against Belarus by introducing restrictive measures against three Belarusian enterprises and 38 citizens. Thus, sanctions were imposed against the Belneftekhim concern, open joint stock companies BMZ - the management company of the BMK Holding and Minsk Electrotechnical Plant, as well as against 38 Belarusian citizens - judges, prosecutors, heads and employees of penitentiary institutions, employees of state media. Restrictions include trade and financial measures. On August 15, Switzerland joined these sanctions.
