OREANDA-NEWS The Police and Border Guard Department plans to install water barriers on the Narva River along the Russian border, the ERR television and radio company reported on Wednesday.
"If our land border is ready in terms of infrastructure by the end of 2025, with the exception of some works, then narrow rivers or Lake Teploe (Peipsi-Pskov Lake Complex), where there are no special obstacles to overcome, are vulnerable today. Therefore, if we create a barrier, we will have time to react if an incident occurs," said Veiko Kommusaar, Deputy director of the Police and Border Guard Department.
Similar barriers are used in America to combat the entry of illegal migrants. The Estonian Border Guard Service wants to test something similar on a one-and-a-half-kilometer-long section, the portal notes.
Purchases of floating barriers will begin in the coming months, and tests will take place next year.
The cost of the pilot project is about 1 million euros. The length of the river and lake border between Estonia and Russia is almost 200 km.
