OREANDA-NEWS The Estonian authorities will participate in the purchase of weapons from the United States for Ukraine, Estonian President Alar Karis said on Wednesday at a joint conference with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte.
We are talking about participation in the PURL – Prioritized Ukraine Requirements List initiative, which provides for the rapid supply of weapons through voluntary contributions from NATO member countries.
"The US initiative to purchase weapons is a great initiative in this area (of assistance to Ukraine - ed.).... Today I want to emphasize that Estonia fully supports this initiative. And we are happy to take part in this," said Karis.
The President also added that the Estonian government is ready to provide military forces for a "coalition of willing" to "guarantee peace in Ukraine."
US President Donald Trump announced earlier that the United States and the European Union had agreed to send American weapons to Ukraine, while the costs would fall on Europe. Future shipments will include Patriot batteries, not just missiles. According to media reports, Washington is already insisting on Germany's purchase of twice as many air defense systems as previously discussed. France, Italy, the Czech Republic, Hungary and other countries have already refused to participate in the initiative.
Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov noted that any shipments containing weapons for Ukraine would become a legitimate target for the Russian Federation. The ministry stressed that NATO member countries were "playing with fire" by supplying weapons to Kiev. The Kremlin emphasized that pumping the Kiev regime with weapons from the West does not contribute to the success of the Russian-Ukrainian negotiations and will have a negative effect. Lavrov also stated that the United States and NATO are directly involved in the conflict in Ukraine, including not only supplying weapons, but also training personnel in the UK, Germany, Italy and other countries.
