OREANDA-NEWS Estonian border guards fined a Russian citizen 400 euros for a St. George ribbon on a car, the portal of the state television and radio broadcasting ERR reports.

"Last weekend, at the border checkpoint in Narva, Estonian border guards noticed a St. George ribbon fixed on the rear-view mirror of a car entering Estonia from Russia. The driver, who had Russian citizenship, voluntarily handed over the tape and was fined 400 euros, since such symbols are prohibited in Estonia," the report says.

The Estonian Parliament last April passed a law banning the use of "hostile symbols". The Law provides for punishment for the public display of symbols associated with the support or justification of acts of aggression, genocide, crimes against humanity or war crimes. Punishment can be imposed in the form of a monetary fine of up to 1200 euros or arrest. In the case of legal entities, the fine can be up to 32 thousand euros.

The law does not name specific symbols, but the police explained that St. George ribbons, the symbol "Z", flags of Russia and the USSR, as well as Soviet military uniforms are considered "hostile symbols".
