OREANDA-NEWS  Data processing centers (data centers) could be located in spent coal pits, which would save on long-term investments in their creation and cooling. Ilya Seredyuk, Governor of the Kemerovo Region, announced this on the sidelines of the Russian Energy Week, TASS reports.

He recalled that coal miners have to spend a lot of resources on reclamation and maintenance of quarries, and in the case of such use, two goals can be combined at once.

In addition, the security of facilities will increase significantly. According to the head of Kuzbass, it is possible to build a house on several floors at the bottom of the quarry, where the equipment will be placed.

On the eve of October 14, State Duma deputy Oleg Matveychev also said that data centers should be located in the depths of Siberia, for example, in coal pits, so that they "would be inaccessible to any bombing and similar things."

Apparently, the speakers are confusing coal pits and mines. If the latter are underground and protected from impact by a multi-meter layer of earth, the former are dug pits, often several kilometers in diameter, which do not provide any additional protection from attacks or high temperatures.

The idea arose against the background of drone strikes on several Russian data centers, which sparked urgent discussions about the need to protect such facilities.
