OREANDA-NEWS  Indonesia and Russia are working on promoting a project to build a cosmodrome on Biak Island in the Indonesian province of Papua, the Indonesian presidential administration said in a statement on the visit of Head of state Prabowo Subianto to the Eastern Economic Forum (EEF), which was reviewed by RIA Novosti.

Earlier, Russian Ambassador to Indonesia Sergey Tolchenov told RIA Novosti that Moscow and Jakarta are at the initial stage of discussing possible cooperation on the creation of a spaceport on Biak. According to him, the Indonesian National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN) has already held its first consultations with the Russian side.

"Space cooperation is gaining strategic importance: Indonesia's National Research and Innovation Agency and its Russian partners are working to promote the Biak cosmodrome project," the statement said.

The Indonesian presidential administration noted that cooperation in the space sector is among the strategic priorities of Russian-Indonesian relations, identified by Russian President Vladimir Putin and Prabowo during their meeting in Moscow on April 13.

In 2026, the Indonesian authorities intensified work on the project of the first national cosmodrome. In May, the Government of the country approved the regulatory framework for the activities of spaceports, and in June BRIN, the authorities of Papua Province and Biak-Numfor District signed a memorandum on the planning and development of a spaceport on Biak Island.
