OREANDA-NEWS  The Iranian Navy has returned to service one of the diesel-electric submarines of the 877EKM Halibut project, which it considers the main threat to US Navy ships. This is reported by the Telegram channel ImpNavigator.

The authors of the message drew attention to the picture of the Iranian naval base in Bandar Abbas. It shows a submarine built in Russia, which is moored, not in dock.

It is noted that in recent years, all three Halibut ships of the Iranian Navy have been undergoing long-term repairs. The authors also admitted that the submarines are being upgraded.

The submarines of the 877EKM project (Export Capitalist Modernized) are distinguished by mechanisms optimized for operation in tropical conditions. The main armament of the submarines were torpedo tubes of 533 mm caliber. In the 1990s, Iran received three "Halibut". Initially, the contract provided for the supply of six ships, but under pressure from the United States, it was revised.

In January, Jack Buckby, a columnist for the American publication 19FortyFive, admitted that Russian-made submarines of the Iranian Navy could pose a major threat to US Navy ships in the Persian Gulf.
