OREANDA-NEWS US researchers discovered the nose of the USS Grunion submarine, which sank during its first combat mission in the Pacific Ocean during World War II. This was reported by Live Science.

The ship sank at a depth of 820 meters off the coast of the Aleutian Islands, and 70 sailors were killed. A fragment of the submarine was discovered using autonomous submarines as part of the Lost 52 Project, the purpose of which is to search for 52 submarines that disappeared during World War II.

USS Grunion went into operation on April 11, 1942. In June 1942, the submarine was sent to the Aleutian Islands, which border the Bering Sea from the south. She managed to sink two Japanese patrol boats, and on July 30 was recalled to Dutch Harbor (Alaska). Along the way, she disappeared, but was found lost only on October 5, 1942.
