OREANDA-NEWS The European Union asked citizens to do their part to reduce dependence on energy imports from Russia. This was reported by Bloomberg.

In partnership with the International Energy Agency, the bloc outlined nine steps citizens can take to reduce consumption. Among them, Europeans were urged to turn off the heating, reduce car speeds and switch to a remote work format.

By saving, the EU could potentially reduce its annual consumption by 17 billion cubic meters of natural gas and 220 million barrels of oil. A more responsible approach to consumption would also have a positive impact on household bills, which could save 450 euros annually. Birol warned, however, that if the measures were abandoned, the consequences could be painful, as utilities would be forced to ration energy supplies to consumers.

The day before, on April 20, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Germany Annalena Berbock announced her intention to completely refuse Russian energy sources. French President Emmanuel Macron also said that the country does not need Russian gas.
