OREANDA-NEWS  King Haakon VIII of Norway took the oath of office before the Storting (Parliament) on Tuesday in accordance with the Constitution.

"I promise and swear to govern the Kingdom of Norway in accordance with its Constitution and laws, so help me Almighty and Omniscient God!" said the king.

The swearing in of the King according to article 9 of the Constitution is one of the most important constitutional acts related to the change of the throne. It is here that the king promises to rule in accordance with the laws of Norway.

The oath given in the Storting indicates that the power and powers of the monarch are limited and regulated by the provisions of the Basic Law.

The ceremony of swearing in the king was watched by the widow of King Harald V Sonja.

Haakon VIII's wife, Queen Mette-Marit, could not attend. According to the royal court, she had health problems after undergoing a lung transplant in June.

Currently, there are two queens in Norway: the wife of King Haakon VIII with the title Her Royal Highness Mette-Marit and the widow of King Harald V with the title Her Majesty Queen Sonja Haraldsen.

King Harald V of Norway, the oldest monarch in Europe, died at the age of 89 on August 28.

He will be buried on September 9th.
