OREANDA-NEWS  Europe's main problem is its unwillingness to accept the challenge in the political and military spheres. This opinion was expressed by Nick Carter, former Chief of the British Defense Staff, General and strategic adviser at the Tony Blair Institute for Global Change, Politico quotes him as saying.

"Europe's problem so far has been its political and military unwillingness to accept the challenge. But now, when the United States is hesitating (...), the continent is at a strategic turning point and faces a choice: take responsibility for its own defense and security or remain dangerously dependent on forces beyond its control," the expert said. On September 5, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz said that Europe is currently unable to play the role it would like in world affairs, as it depends on the United States.

According to him, Europe has "limited opportunities to pursue an independent policy." On September 8, former head of the European Diplomacy Josep Borrel, former Belgian Prime Minister Guy Verhofstadt and former MEP Domenech Ruiz Devesa noted in a joint article for Politico that the European Union (EU) could become a vassal of the United States and has already agreed to a secondary role in the settlement in Ukraine.
