OREANDA-NEWS  The UN General Assembly adopted a Russian resolution on the non-deployment of the first weapons in space, according to the results of the vote. 122 countries voted for the document, 50 against it, and four more abstained.

The resolution calls on all States, especially those with space capabilities, to consider "expressing ... commitment to the political commitment not to be the first to deploy weapons in outer space."

The General Assembly urges to start work on the basis of the draft treaty of Russia and China of 2008 on the prevention of the deployment of weapons in outer space as soon as possible, it follows from the text. The authors of the documents confirmed that the prevention of an arms race in outer space is an urgent task.

In August, the deputy head of the Russian delegation to the NPT Review Conference, Andrei Belousov, stated that the United States could use the situation in Ukraine to implement its plans in the military space sphere, including the deployment of weapons in space. Тhe fact that America and its allies for 15 years refused to engage in dialogue with Moscow on legally binding agreements to prevent an arms race in outer space speaks for itself.
