OREANDA-NEWS   US President Donald Trump has imposed import duties on some semiconductors and equipment for their production. The signed decree is posted on the White House website.

The Head of State explained the 25 percent tariff for national security reasons. It will affect some goods, except for semiconductors supplied from abroad for the development of American chip manufacturing, use in data centers, research and development, start—ups and civilian industrial applications.

"The U.S. semiconductor manufacturing capacity is too small to meet the projected needs of national defense and the growing needs of the commercial industry. The United States consumes about a quarter of all semiconductors in the world, but fully produces only about 10 percent of the chips it needs, making it highly dependent on foreign supply chains," the White House said.

At the beginning of the year, Trump decided to cancel the semiconductor deal between Emcore and HieFo. According to him, HieFo's acquisition of Emcore's computer chip manufacturing assets threatens the national security of the United States. The decree of the American leader emphasizes that HieFo is allegedly controlled by a Chinese citizen.
