OREANDA-NEWS  Turkish Ambassador to Russia Tanju Bilgic thanked the Russian Federation for the support of his country during the events of July 15, 2016, when an attempted coup was launched in the republic.

On the evening of July 15, 2016, part of the Turkish military staged a coup attempt: tanks were used, and airstrikes were carried out on the parliament and the presidential palace in Ankara. By the morning of July 16, the rebellion was suppressed, but over two days of fighting more than 200 people died and about 3,000 were injured. Later, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan declared July 15 the day of democracy and national unity.

"Russia was one of the first countries to recognize the threat of Fethullah Gulen's terrorist group in Turkey in a timely manner and take appropriate measures. She was also at the forefront of the States that immediately condemned the July 15 coup attempt and supported our country. In this regard, I would like to once again express my gratitude to the Russian Federation and the Russian authorities," the Turkish ambassador said in a statement at a reception in honor of a memorable date in the modern history of Turkey at the embassy.

The Turkish authorities accuse Fethullah Gulen's organization, which they call FETÖ, of involvement in the July 2016 coup attempt. In Turkey, more than 80,000 people were arrested after the uprising, and about 150,000 civil servants, including military personnel, were fired or suspended. Gulen, who died in October 2024 in the United States, denied the charges against him.
The FETÖ organization once had influence in all spheres of Turkish life, from education to politics and the security sector. Its activities in the republic were officially banned and declared terrorist after the attempted coup in 2016. The Turkish authorities have repeatedly accused the United States at the highest level of financing and supporting the organization.
