OREANDA-NEWS. Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu, in an interview with NTV, said that Turkey would impose sanctions against Russia if they were approved by the United Nations (UN). He added that the impact of the sanctions will not pass without a trace and will be felt for many years, and Turkey's influence in the international arena will increase over time.

Turkey acts in accordance with international law. We will adhere to a balanced position,” he stated.

The Turkish diplomat said the country will comply with UN-imposed sanctions in accordance with international law, adding that Turkey will become a much more important player on the international stage in the future.

Earlier, Cavusoglu said that Turkey assesses the negotiations between Russia and Ukraine without sufficient optimism or pessimism. According to him, the Turkish side is making efforts to organize a meeting between Kyiv and Moscow, and it is possible if Russian President Vladimir Putin agrees. The diplomat noted that the events in Bucha had a negative impact on the negotiation process, but in his opinion, despite all the difficulties, the parties have the opportunity to reach a truce.

Cavusoglu added that Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan plans to hold telephone conversations with Putin in the near future. What exactly will be discussed, he did not specify.
