OREANDA-NEWS Oil prices are rising and have risen to three-week highs due to continued uncertainty about the situation in the Middle East.
Traders continue to evaluate the flow of conflicting reports regarding developments in the region. Expectations of a peaceful settlement of the conflict between the United States and Iran have significantly weakened due to the failure of earlier diplomatic efforts. At the same time, media reports indicate the possibility of a serious escalation.
The Financial Times reported, citing sources, that Tehran is considering the possibility of attacking American facilities in Europe in the event of a further escalation of the conflict with the United States. In particular, the possibility of attacking targets in Southeastern European countries was studied, for example, in Bulgaria, which in July approved the use of the Bezmer airbase for refueling American aircraft.
By 14:45 Moscow time, October Brent futures rose in price on the London ICE Futures Exchange by $0.84 (0.92%) to $91.86 per barrel.
By this time, September WTI futures were rising in price on the NYMEX exchange by $0.87 (1.02%), to $85.81 per barrel.
In recent days, US President Donald Trump has regularly stated that the US military, thanks to the naval blockade of Iran, de facto controls the Strait of Hormuz. The Iranian authorities, for their part, periodically emphasize that the strait remains under Iranian control.
The activity of vessel traffic through the Strait of Hormuz earlier this week is below the average level for the last 10 days (11 tankers per day). According to Kpler, six tankers passed through the strait on August 18, and nine on Monday.
"Confidence in the safety of ship passage remains weak, and traffic volume remains well below normal levels," said Tim Waterer, analyst at KCM Trade. "Continued uncertainty continues to support the geopolitical risk premium in oil prices."
Traders are waiting for data from the US Department of Energy on energy reserves in the country. According to estimates by the American Petroleum Institute API, reserves decreased by 328 thousand barrels.
