OREANDA-NEWS The loss of Russian airlines from sales in 2022 amounted to 144 billion rubles, according to the report of the Russian Association of Air Transport Operators (AEVT).

At the same time, expenses for the year fell by 3 percent, and income — by 13 percent. The document notes that most carriers managed to maintain financial and economic stability even under sanctions thanks to the support of the state.

The main challenges for the industry in 2022, AEVT called the prospect of losing part of the fleet (primarily international) due to the lack of spare parts, financial problems and the closure of 11 airports and part of the airspace of Russia. In addition, the association called the problem of insufficiently rapid import substitution of foreign aircraft.

Against the background of these factors, passenger traffic of Russian airlines fell by 14 percent, to 95 million people, and cargo traffic — by 59 percent at once, to 606 thousand tons. The largest decrease in cargo and passenger traffic occurred on international air lines.

In the first quarter of 2023, passenger traffic increased by 7 percent compared to the end of last year, and cargo traffic continued to fall — a decrease of 58 percent. If these trends continue, then, according to AEVT, this year we can expect the restoration of passenger traffic to the level of 2021 (111 million people) and a further decline in cargo transportation, mainly with non-CIS countries.

Against this background, the carriers said they were counting on subsidies from the government. In April, it was reported that the head of AEVT Vladimir Tasun sent a letter to the Minister of Transport Vitaly Savelyev with a request to allocate another 100 billion rubles to the industry.
